As of Thursday morning, Calgary had just over 3,000 participants. The National Capital Region has just over 4,500. We have a goal of 10,000 participants, so we're almost half way there! Help us reach our goal by encouraging people to take the bus, telework, carpool, walk, in-line or cycle to work Friday. Even if they participate for just one day, they will count in the Commuter Challenge. It's easy - just log onto our web site: http://ottawa.commuterchallenge.net , or call us at 788-3200. Message-ID: Today is the last day for entering your results for the commuter challenge. Did you take a green mode to/from work last week (Walk, bike, inline-skate, Telecommute, Bus and/or even car pool)? If so, please go to http://ottawa.commuterchallenge.net/ , register, and indicate what mode(s) you took! We are currently at 9476 active participants (IE: Participants who both registered and entered in their distances) and would like to break the 10,000 mark before the data entry deadline tonight! We have 1060 people who registered but did not enter in their distances, so even if those people entered their distance we would make that number! --- Russell McOrmond, Internet Consultant: Concentrating on Commuter Challenge - replies may be slow! National Capital Region wins its challenge against Calgary for the 2nd year in a row! The National Capital Region walked away with its second straight victory over Calgary in the annual Canadian Commuter Challenge. Final results showed that 10,830 people in the Nation's Capital took the Commuter Challenge, compared to 4,500 people in Calgary. "It's great for the Nation's Capital to win the Commuter Challenge again," said Sharon Boddy, Coordinator, "but we're even more thrilled that we surpassed our goal of 10,000 participants. All the thanks go to the people of the Region for joining us in the challenge and making it such a success." James Van Leeuwen, one of the coordinators with both the Calgary Commuter Challenge and the Canadian Commuter Challenge congratulated the National Capital. "You annihilated us!" he exclaimed. Many of those 10,830 people who walked, cycled, in-line skated, took the bus, teleworked, and carpooled during the week of June 5 - 9 were regular drivers who opted for a more environmentally friendly option during the week. If all 10,827 participants in the Commuter Challenge had been drivers in single occupant vehicles, over 250 metric tonnes of additional air pollution would have been added to the Region's air that week alone. "Just one person can have such an impact on the quality of our air," said Ms. Boddy, "Never let it be said that one person can't make a difference!" An awards ceremony to honour the top groups and individuals will be held June 28. Details of the ceremony will be announced at a later date.
